What do I need to rip a 4K UHD Blu-ray?

A Blu-ray drive whose firmware supports LibreDrive - most reliably the LG BU40N (sold as the Verbatim 43888) - flashed with LibreDrive-compatible firmware, plus MakeMKV. UltraHD Drives ships the drive already flashed, LibreDrive-verified and read-tested.

What does pre-flashed mean?

We install LibreDrive-compatible firmware on the drive and verify it in MakeMKV before dispatch, so it reads 4K UHD discs out of the box. Flashing is the step where people most often brick a drive, so we do it for you.

Should I use MakeMKV or DVDFab?

We recommend MakeMKV. It is the most reliable tool for LibreDrive-flashed drives. DVDFab can misreport flashed drives and is riskier, so we do not recommend it.

Can it rip 3D Blu-ray?

Yes. The drive reads 3D Blu-ray; enable the MVC track in MakeMKV to keep the 3D stream.
