Ripping 3D Blu-rays (the MVC track)

The drive reads 3D Blu-rays fine — the catch is in MakeMKV and playback. By default MakeMKV drops the 3D track and your rip comes out as 2D. Here's how to keep the full frame-packed 3D.

Keep the 3D track

  1. Open the 3D disc in MakeMKV and expand the main title.
  2. Tick the MVC video track (the second video stream) as well as the main one — that's the layer that carries the 3D.
  3. Or make it automatic: under Preferences → Advanced, enable Expert mode and add the rule +sel:mvcvideo so every 3D title keeps its MVC track.
  4. Rip as normal. The result is a lossless, frame-packed 3D MKV.
Playing it back

You'll need a 3D-capable display (3D TV or projector) and a player that understands 3D MVC in MKV — for example Kodi/LibreELEC on capable hardware, or MPC-BE with madVR on a PC. For displays that prefer side-by-side, convert the file with a tool like BD3D2MK3D.

If your setup is 2D only, just rip without the MVC track for a normal 2D copy — you can always re-rip later if you add a 3D display.
